In recognition to the notable contributions made by Prof. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis in the fields of economic planning and statistical development, the Government of India has designated 29th June ,every year as it is his birth day , This year , on 29th June 2018, Maris Stella college has celebrated “ National Statistics Day in collaboration with National Sample Survey Organization with the theme “Quality Assurance in Official Statistics”. On this occasion the department has arranged a guest lecture and various competitions.
The Statistical Day celebrations were inaugurated by Dr. Sr. Jascintha Quadras, Principal, Maris Stella College and presided by E.V. Gangadhara Rao, Deputy Director General, NSSO(FOD) Vijayawada.. In his keynote, he hailed the theme of this year’s statistical day, that is Quality Assurance in Official Statistics” fundamental principles and “National Quality assurance Framework developed by United Nations Statistical Commission also elaborated on fundamental principles of official statistics . Concerted efforts will be made throughout the year to bring improvements in the quality of data in this particular field for objective planning and policy making.
Shri Jalluri Naveen Gupta, Guest speaker from Dept of management Studies, PSCMR CET in his speech emphasized the importance of statistics day celebration, use of statistics in banking sectors, institutions etc, opportunities of statisticians in different departments like e-business, Start up business and sample surveys. He emphasized the example of various official statistics, need for improvement of data collection techniques & application of relevant statistical tools, and identifying data gaps. He added that every young statistician should have a domain specific knowledge for proper application of statistics. A presentation was made on data sources to familiarize students regarding extent of availability of data sources.
About 200 participants including students from 11 colleges/universities, statistical officials from state and central government participated in this event. On this occasion, various events like paper presentations, elocution, essay-writing competitions & quiz were conducted. The statistics day celebrations were concluded by the prize distribution to the winners.
SAANKHYA’18
The Department has conducted an intercollegiate Statistics meet ‘SAANKHYA’18’ by the Statistics club “SAANKHYA” .On this occasion, the department has arranged a guest lecture by Dr. Prasad, Data scientist, Honey well technologies and solutions, Hyderabad on “The applications of Statistics in real world and opportunities in Business analytics”. While speaking he mentioned that Statistics students has plenty opportunities in business field with a sound good background of computer knowledge. On the same day the department also conducted paper presentation, poster presentation and quiz competitions for the students from various colleges . 15 colleges in and around Vijayawada were participated in the competitions and won the prizes.
Mrs. Saraja from the department has attended a three day national workshop on “ the applications of SPSS, Structural Equation modeling by AMOS” conducted by Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore, Tamilnadu from November 23rd to 25th ,2018.
